Festival fever to hit Hilltops

Nov 13, 2018

Tourism operators across the Hilltops region are preparing for the annual influx of visitors who travel from far and wide to attend the National Cherry Festival.

Thousands are expected to descend on region for this year’s festival which Hilltops Mayor Brian Ingram said provides a significant boost to the local tourism industry as well as the broader economy.

“Our local tourism industry is certainly one we can be proud of, it’s growing all the time as the unique events our region is renowned for such as the National Cherry Festival, get bigger and better every year resulting in the attraction of more visitors, especially international visitors.” Mayor Ingram said.

“This is an especially busy season for our accommodation sector who provide hospitality to visitors all year round. Obviously, beds and camping sites fill up pretty quickly in Young but there’s plenty of accommodation options in other nearby towns and villages such as the Caravan Parks in Boorowa and Harden, with both powered and unpowered sites available.”

Visitors can choose from a variety of accommodation options right across the Hilltops region. “Given the relatively short travel-time to Young from places like Boorowa, Harden and Jugiong, I expect visitors will take advantage of the accommodation on offer in these centres, which helps ensure the economic benefit of Young’s signature event, is spread across the Hilltops Region and allows visitors to explore the offerings of the wider area” he shared.

Mayor Ingram said landowners who are considering making their property available as a temporary camping site, should contact Council as soon as possible to ensure they have the correct paperwork.

“Council can assist residents with the process of opening up their private land for tourists, but with the festival now only a few short weeks away, anyone interested in doing this should get in touch with Council as soon as possible to ensure there’s plenty of time to complete the relevant application.” Mayor Ingram said.

The Woolworths National Cherry Festival is being held Friday 30 November to Sunday 2 December 2018. Festival guides are available from the Young and Boorowa Visitor Information Centres, Hilltops Council Young Office, Woolworths Young and various other local businesses.
