Hilltops Council service to community through music development

Sep 21, 2018

The Young Town Band is a Hilltops Council sponsored organisation that performs, educates and welcomes people from our region of any age and ability at no cost to play and instruments are available free of charge for musicians use. With over 150 years history as a band, the group perform at six major local events per year as well as having regular rehearsals and interactions.

Rodney Clancy – Musical Director/Conductor of Young Town Band, said; “Students of any age are welcome to join the players within the Young Town Band for fun, learning and performing.  This is everyone from a beginner who does not even have an instrument yet, through to the most advanced of music teachers in our community.  As the band is free to join and play in; it is only the commitment to have fun and learn that counts.  We can even offer instruments to use if you play in our band. There are also three scholarships of up to a $1,000 that you can apply for at the moment.”

The incredible and unusually long history of our own Young Town Band needs to be kept, encouraged and supported by our locals today and tomorrow.  It started in the time of the Lambing Flat Goldfields, focused, and grew in strength to win national awards in competitions.  Now it is a concert band, readied to support local community events and to help develop music in the region.

“We perform at events including The National Cherry Festival, ANZAC Day, Australia Day, Carols in the Park, IGA Kids Day and Young Show.  We are always accepting new members and would encourage anyone who is wanting to learn an instrument to approach us soon.  We rehearse in the Young Town Hall on Monday nights of school terms from 6pm – 7:30pm.  It is free to play with us and a benefit of playing with us is our instrument borrowing program.” Said Mr. Clancy.

The Young Town Band is managed by a Section 355 committee of Hilltops Council made up of mostly members of the band and associated persons.  The committee and members of the band have a focus on promoting the band and calling for any return members or new members to join the fun.
