Illegal Dumping Concerns – Council Reinforces Infringement Notices

Apr 2, 2026

In recent months, Council has recorded an increase in illegal dumping across the Hilltops Local Government Area.

Council acknowledges and appreciates the community’s ongoing commitment to keeping the region clean and thanks residents who dispose of their waste responsibly. Convenient waste management options remain available, including kerbside collection, recycling and green waste services, as well as access to Council waste facilities.

Council takes illegal dumping seriously and maintains a firm approach to enforcement. Compliance Officers actively investigate all reports and will take action where sufficient evidence exists.

Individuals caught illegally dumping waste may be issued infringement notices, with fines ranging from $160 up to $1,000 depending on the nature and severity of the offence. Regrettably, most recent offences have been at the upper end of this range with fines typically around $1,000 per offence.

More serious offences, such as pollution of land, may attract penalties of up to $45,000. These penalties reflect the seriousness of illegal dumping across New South Wales and reinforce the importance of responsible waste disposal.

Council encourages anyone who witnesses illegal dumping to report it directly to Council or via the NSW EPA’s Report Illegal Dumping (RID) system at https://ridonline.epa.nsw.gov.au/#/home to enable prompt investigation.

By working together and utilising the waste services available, we can maintain a cleaner, safer and more sustainable community for all.
