Hilltops Council Joins Forces for Community Planting Day on the Boorowa River

Hilltops Council is excited to announce a collaborative community planting day on the Boorowa River, in partnership with the Australian River Restoration Centre – Rivers of Carbon team, Boorowa Community Landcare Group, and Birdlife Australia.

The project is being led by the Rivers of Carbon team and Boorowa Community Landcare Group, who alongside Council are dedicated to enhancing water quality and biodiversity in the Boorowa region. The Community Planting day is one part of the Rivers of Carbon Boorowa project which focuses on protecting and restoring six kilometres of stream and forty hectares of riparian habitat to improve water quality, biodiversity, and habitat connectivity in Boorowa.

The Boorowa Community Planting Day will take place on 21 September 2024, beginning at 10am and aims to bring together local residents to enhance the Boorowa River Walk, all whilst learning about the vital role of native plants and fauna.

The day will start with a demonstration on how to plant native trees and shrubs, followed by hands-on planting opportunities for participants.

Rivers of Carbon will also facilitate short educational discussions about land care, birds and biodiversity, with giveaways and information about native plants, water bugs, the Southern Pygmy Perch and Superb Parrot. Attendees will also be able chat to the local Landcare Coordinator Amber Kelly, Paul Russell from Birdlife Australia, representatives from Council and Jed Pearson from Waterwatch and Rivers of Carbon.

This is a free event, however, we ask participants to please register beforehand, as a light lunch will be provided.

Participants are asked to bring sturdy walking shoes and planting-appropriate clothing, wet weather gear, gloves and a water bottle. Please note, families are welcome, but children must always be under direct supervision due to the proximity of the river. Please be sure to register all attendees.
