Media Release – 18 July 2024 – Community Update on Young Stormwater Trunk Main Project

At the September 2023 Ordinary Council Meeting, Council resolved to commence the investigation, design and costing for the Young Stormwater Drainage Line D3, which runs along Lynch Street into Marina Street and discharges into Burrangong Creek. This decision was made due to the need for infrastructure upgrades to enhance Young’s stormwater management, crucial for flood mitigation.

Following thorough planning and preparatory work, Council is pleased to update the community on the progress of the Young Stormwater Trunk Main project.

Currently, the project is advancing through essential stages of investigation, design, and costing. Significant milestones so far include comprehensive service location assessments (including potholing), geotechnical investigations, and the proposed concept design alignment of stormwater pipes. Additionally, a review of environmental factors has been drafted, pending final alignment confirmation.

However, progress has been impacted due to the identification of a telecommunications cable that runs parallel to the current stormwater infrastructure. This has required extensive coordination with stakeholders outside of Council and has extended the timeline by over 6 months.

Looking ahead, the project timeline and milestones are as follows:

Once the initial stage of the project is completed, tender documents will be prepared and released to market. A suitably qualified tenderer can then be selected to complete the construction of stormwater Drainage Line D3.
