Media Release – 31 January 2023 – Streets as Shared Spaces

Feb 1, 2023

Hilltops Council is delivering trial activations to provide public space for sitting and space for eating or gathering along Boorowa Street in Young. The NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program aims to test permanent changes that strengthen the amenity and economic vitality of Boorowa Street and surrounding its area. These changes are to aimed to positively impact the local economy, community health and wellbeing in line with the NSW Governments focus where streets have become a focal point during the COVID-19 pandemic and are one of the most important forms of public space.

The activations involve transforming crossings and underutilised space to install activations along three street blocks of Boorowa Street, Young (between Clarke Street to Main Street, Main Street to Lynch Street and Lynch Street to Zouch Street). The activations within Young’s Town Centre aims to enliven activity, support local businesses and make enjoyable places for the community.

This project is proudly fully grant funded by the NSW Government under the Streets as Shared Spaces program. The Streets as Shared Spaces program provides one-off grant funding to support local councils to test and pilot new and innovative ideas for streets as shared public spaces.
