Murrumburrah to unveil Mackay Sculpture

Aug 12, 2019

A bronze, life size sculpture of Major-General, the Honourable James Alexander Kenneth Mackay C.B., O.B.E., V.D., F.R.G.S. will be officially unveiled at the Light Horse Memorial in Murrumburrah on Saturday 31 August 2019 at 11am.

This sculpture is designed to commemorate the actions of Major-General Kenneth Mackay in the creation of the First Australian Light Horse troop. The story of Major General Kenneth Mackay OBE and his raising of the First Australian Horse in 1897, a cavalry regiment recruited entirely from country districts in the NSW colony. This creation is tied to the history of the South West Slopes, its earliest settlement, and the growth of our community. Mackay’s political leadership, strategic vision and military expertise are all central to the success of the First Australian Horse.

The unit was his idea and was guided and funded by him from its inception. His vision for a unified Australian troop led to the creation of the Australian Light Horse. While there are many stories and legends about the Light Horse in Australian military history, it all begins with Major General Kenneth Mackay at Murrumburrah, a unique legacy for our community to commemorate and celebrate.

The project is supported by the Harden Murrumburrah Historical Society, the Murrumburrah Heritage Lt. Horse Troop, Mackay Family Association and the NSW Government through a Stronger Country Community grant.
Council staff will coordinate and complete the required footing construction in consultation with the project’s sculptor, Mr Louis Laumen of Yarraville, Victoria. Mr Laumen is a highly credentialed artist, being responsible for many sculptures about the War Memorial in Canberra, many church related religious sculptures and those of famous sporting heroes including one of Donald Bradman at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Community members are invited to join Council, the Committee and members of the Mackay family at the official unveiling.
