Alcohol Free Zone in Young

Jun 29, 2018

Hilltops Council have resolved to re-establish an Alcohol Free Zone in Young. The Alcohol Free Zone will be in place for a four year period until 20 June 2022 at which time it will be reviewed

Council had previously resolved and implemented the current zones in accordance with the requirements of Section 644 of the Local Government Act as well as Ministerial guidelines on this matter. Part of the stipulation is a review of the subsequent maximum ‘in force’ period of these zones, being four years from the date of resolution. This time had lapsed which meant Council needed to review their decision for the continuation of the zone moving forward.

Mayor Brian Ingram said “There is a demonstrated need for the Zone to remain and this is evident from requests we have received from the local Police to re-establish these zones. As a Council we place huge importance on the safety of our community and are therefore guided by police when making decisions based on public safety.”

The zone sees minimal financial implications for Council with the replacement of signs in the precinct at a cost of approximately $1200.

Council will confirm their decision formally to the NSW Police Local Area Command as well as placing a public notice in local media and Council’s website to that effect.
