Boorowa Waste Transfer Station Open

Dec 23, 2019

Council have completed the construction of a new waste transfer station in Boorowa. This construction is a major step towards the closure of the existing landfill site. The current landfill has been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) NSW as not complying with the legislative requirements for such a facility.

Hilltops Mayor Brian Ingram, who attended the inaugural operation of the compactor said “The Boorowa Waste Transfer Facility represents a major stride forward for Hilltops Council in achieving compliance in waste disposal. I would like to thank all involved in delivering the project successfully.”

This project was supported by two grants the former Boorowa Shire Council were successful in securing, one for the construction and the other for the landfill closure. These grants were from the NSW Environmental Trust.

The facility commenced operations from 13 December 2019, with landfill capping scheduled to occur in early 2020. The delay in capping the landfill will allow Council the opportunity to gain an understanding on how to operate the new facility, without interruption to the community.

The Mayor has asked for the patience of the community during this transition, as Council determine how often trailers need to be taken to the Jugiong disposal site.

The waste transfer facility will continue to receive waste on the same basis as the previous landfill did  while Council finalises its Waste Strategy. This will include a review of disposal fees across the Hilltops Local Government Area. Any change to fees at the facility is not anticipated to occur until July 2020.
