Funding win for Carrington Park

Sep 5, 2018

Hilltops Council has been successful in its application to the State Government’s Heritage Near Me program for $96,900 for the revitalisation of historic Carrington Park. The project will focus on the restoration of the Band Rotunda and upgrading of the surrounding gardens, monuments and pathways. Additional seating and interpretive signage will also be included to improve visitor amenity and increase visitation.

“We are very pleased to receive this funding and provide Carrington Park with a makeover to preserve the important features of the park.” Shared Mayor Ingram.

Further consultation regarding the project will commence in the coming months with the project expected to be completed by October 2019.

In assessing the project application, the panel noted that it was an outstanding project, was well resourced, will activate the heritage of the park and the benefit to the local community is evident.

Council submitted the application to the Heritage Near Me program after acknowledging the strong and passionate desire of the community to ensure that Carrington Park remain well-maintained as a showpiece for Young and that it continues to play a key role in the story-telling of the history of Young.

“I want to reassure the community that Council is listening. We know how important the park is to the community and this injection of funding will help to ensure that Council can give the Band Rotunda, the existing pathways and the garden beds a spruce up.” Mayor Ingram added.

33 applicants were successful in this year’s round of the Heritage Near Me grants with a total of 148 applications for funding totalling over $10.3 million.

The assessment panel noted the high standard of projects and that the assessment process was very difficult.

The majority of projects are based in regional NSW and benefiting heritage items include listed churches, community halls, pubs, cemeteries, a telescope, and the world’s first commercial solar thermal power station.
