NSW Ambulance advises people in the South West Slopes weather forecast district to PREPARE NOW for a forecast of Severe heatwave conditions.
A prolonged period of heat is forecast to build over southern and central NSW this week. Maximum temperatures in the high thirties inland and high twenties along the coast and overnight minimum temperatures in the mid teens early this week.
The severe to extreme heatwave will expand and peak mid to late this week with maximum temperatures reaching the high thirties to mid forties and overnight minimum temperatures in the low to mid twenties.
What you need to do:
- Monitor weather conditions using the Bureau of Meteorology’s weather services
- Check for and consider all warnings in your area
- Drink plenty of water. Hydrate before, during and after heatwave and extreme heat conditions.
- Avoid the heat. Schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat. If you must go out take water with you, wear a hat and cooler protective clothing and seek shade.
- Cool your home by closing doors, windows, curtains and blinds to block out hot air and the sun and use air conditioning or fans
- Identify local cool spaces/places– Air-conditioned public buildings such as community centres, libraries or shopping centres
- Store medication at recommended temperatures. Continue to follow your doctor’s advice if you have any medical condtions
- Check in and assist vulnerable and at-risk people who may need help to prepare.
- Never leave children or pets alone in a vehicle. Leaving children or pets unattended in a car can be fatal. The temperature inside a parked car can double in minutes.
- Plan shelter and cool water for pets and other animals
- Prepare your emergency kit- (Medications, water, food, portable battery-operated radio, mobile phone and charger, any special requirements for infants, elderly, injured or disabled persons)
- Plan ahead and prepare for electrical and communication outages
