COUNCILLOR COLUMN

For Immediate Release 28 October 2025 Authorised by Councillor Mary Dodd

Recently, I’ve visited several other Local Government Areas, always seeing them through a councillor’s eyes. Whether it’s road surfaces, footpaths, pigeon deterrents, dog park fences or community events, once you realise how many things Council does, you notice ideas and innovations that might be useful. And each time, I’m grateful to live in Hilltops.

What stands out everywhere, is the difference volunteers make. In our region, countless volunteers enrich our communities – through sporting clubs, arts events, festivals, support services, and village associations. I have recently noticed that Murrumburrah-Harden Rotary is seeking Book Nook helpers, and Coast and Country Community Services needs volunteer drivers. Their efforts make our towns and villages vibrant and caring places to live.

Of course, not everyone is happy with how things are run. If you see a problem, use Council’s Lodge a Request app, email, call, or visit an office in Harden, Boorowa or Young. This ensures your concern is heard and registered and, if you wish, you can receive updates on progress. Sometimes things can be acted on quickly, while other times they are added to the list.

Koorawatha’s new village plan, developed with community input, sets actions for the next five years. Murringo’s plan is nearing completion. Not every idea can be achieved immediately, but aspirational goals matter. Progress depends on funding, community priorities and people willing to get involved. If you see a need, jump in and help make it happen!

By the time you read this, I will have heard bestselling author Chris Hammer at Young library, discussing his new book.

Keep your eye out for the upcoming chemical collections in November in Boorowa, Harden and Young.

I am enjoying the burst of colour on the roundabouts in Young. Thank you to our gardens staff.

Always something happening in Hilltops!
